At this seminar, You will be introduced to the world of permaculture where you will learn how to grow your own food, create an edible landscape garden, compost, rainwater collection, raising and using bamboo, medicinal plants and herbs and building ponds. Our new lineup of workshops and energy fair dates [make these hot links] are hot off the presses, and we’re excited about a number of new programs. Along with many of our classic workshop courses – Biodiesel; Sun, Wind & Water; Advanced Photovoltaics and the like – we’ve also added a great new list of courses to the mix [list these]. We at MORE value your input – drop us a line (or comment here) if you have any suggestions for future workshops or Energy Fairs!

On the “big picture” end of things, we’re also thrilled to see some of the new green policies that are taking shape – particularly through the new federal stimulus bill.

Here are some especially hopeful signs from the Stimulus Package:

$500 million has been promised toward “green collar jobs.” What are these? “Green collar jobs” (think “white-collar” or “blue-collar” jobs), are any occupations that promote a greener, more sustainable future. Such jobs range from sustainable construction to wind generator production to home weatherization. All we at MORE can say is: Hooray! Years before the “Green Collar” craze, MORE was already working to train homeless and otherwise disadvantaged men in the sustainable trades of the future: home biodiesel production, solar panel instillation, greenhouse gardening and more. We couldn’t be more thrilled that the “green collar movement” is finally taking the country by storm – not only helping the environment, but bringing millions of good jobs when the country needs them most. (For more information on the Green Collar movement, click here to see what Van Jones and Green For All have been doing in Oakland, California. It’s downright hopeful stuff!). The plan, as it stands now, would put 460,000 Americans to work on environmentally helpful projects nationwide.

Tens of billions more dollars have been apportioned to remake the country’s electric industry into a greener enterprise. Include here is a “smart grid” that will allow us to use renewable energy sources like solar and wind much more easily and affordably. In the long run, this “smart grid” will save America a ton of money, AND be a huge help for the environment!

The stimulus will result in DOUBLE the amount of alternative energy products to be produced over the next three years

And in ways most important of all, the stimulus will provide funds to weatherize up to 2 million homes --- many of which belong to poor families who can hardly keep up with utility bills --- by sealing leaking windows, better insulating walls, floors and ceilings, and the like. NOTHING will get more “bang for the buck,” and nothing could be a better first step toward helping the poor and the environment.

MORE Energy is pleased to present: David Blume, author of the book Alcohol Can be A Gas, offering a FREE workshop Saturday, May 24th, 10am-3pm at 1411 Locust St, downtown St. Louis on how to produce alcohol fuel on a small scale. Missouri Renewable Energy is participating in a few Earth Day events that we wanted to tell you about.

If you live in Central Missouri, you are invited to attend Columbia, Missouri's Earth Day celebration in Downtown Columbia, on Sunday, April 20th starting at noon. Every year the city of Columbia has a big outdoor celebration in downtown Columbia, with vendors, music, and resources on how to appreciate and save our Earth. Missouri Renewable Energy will be there, with a booth located on "Eco Ave" which is on the north side of Elm between 7th & 8th Streets. Come on by and say hello.

Missouri Renewable Energy is also hosting its own Earth Day event on Tuesday, April 22nd-- MORE will be having a free fair at our location in Marshfield, Missouri. Green-Collar Jobs

Sojourners Magazine had a recent article about green-collar jobs as a viable solution to help save our earth and provide low-income or unskilled workers with advancement out of poverty.

MORE Energy believes and supports training in blue-collar jobs, but WHY limit the skills of the homeless to only sweeping and cooking? Green-collar jobs are a viable and important skill in our growing green workforce. MORE Energy is dedicated to the advancement of green energy as a way out of poverty.

How Green is Your Collar?

"All the Democratic presidential candidates talked about “green-collar jobs.” But what are they? “Green collar jobs are blue collar jobs in green businesses,” according to urban studies professor Raquel Rivera Pinderhughes in a recent report. A green-collar economy will provide high-quality jobs, requiring basic skills, paying a living wage, with room for advancement, to a broad array of low-income or unskilled workers. The main problem, according to the report, is matching green businesses with job-ready workers.

Part of the solution, says Van Jones, environmental leader and president of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights in Oakland, California, was the passage by Congress of the Green Jobs Act of 2007 in August, which authorized $125 million “to create a new training program for energy efficiency and renewable energy workers … for market research, job referral, and job training,” according to the Congressional Budget Office report. Jones hopes that job-training programs will begin incorporating “green pathways out of poverty.” He is advocating that Congress fund $1 billion in green jobs training and is calling for the creation of 3 million clean-tech jobs by 2015."

It has been a long winter... but spring is finally here!

Yes, it has been a long winter in Mid-Missouri, but that hasn't stopped MORE Energy from having its annual Winter Energy show in February. We had a great time and hundreds of attendees who came out to learn about energy saving techniques and resources. And now as spring is approaching we are gearing up for our big Spring Energy show on April 22nd in Marshfield, MO. Our specialty in Marshfield is our dome home constructions and solar energy demonstrations. All of our fairs are FREE, so we hope to see you and your friends and family at one of our upcoming fairs!

Great Day

Thanks to all of you who made it out to our Memorial Day energy fair!

By our estimates, nearly 300 made it to New Bloomfield for the event – perhaps our biggest show yet! Our registry shows that you came in from all over Missouri, and a surprising number too from out-of-state. We’re glad you came, and we hope you had a good experience.

We certainly had a good time ourselves, and enjoyed meeting a lot of you. My wife, Jen, and I led tours of our house (across the street from the center) where we showed how a normal house can be converted, bit-by-bit, toward life “off the grid.”

And of course, at the center itself, we had some of our old faithful demonstrations – the building and design of dome homes, the making of bio-fuels like biodiesel and ethanol, our electric and hybrid vehicles and mowers, and the use of various kinds of solar and wind energy – from high-tech photovoltaics (solar panels) to homemade solar cookers and passive heating methods. We hope you also got the chance to see our new solar carts – we’re extremely excited about them. Maybe, though, I’ll leave them for another post.

Any rate, hope you all had safe travels home, and if you didn’t make it to this one, we’ll hope to see you at the next…

Green Priorities?

Recently my wife and I have enjoyed conversing with a new acquaintance in Columbia: Monta Welch, founder of the Columbia Climate Change Coalition (check out the CCCC's online group). One especially thought-provoking conversation in particular has reopened, at least for me, the question of “green priorities.” As we – as green-minded Missourians, Americans, and earth-dwellers in general – continue to moved toward a united voice and mission, we must ask ourselves, “What for?” Why find and expand our “green community?”

Some of the ready answers are powerful in and of themselves. First, of course, clichéd though it may be, we are a stronger force together than we would be alone – in lobbying, in outreach, in mutual encouragement. We educate one another; we stretch and challenge each other’s perceptions. There is something good – something both utilitarian and ‘holistic’ – about all of this. All things “green” have their value; all green actions have their place.

And to be sure, we should indeed avoid the temptation to hold as more “valuable” any one ecological interest over another: One person’s goal to protect a fragile, local ecosystem is not more “valuable,” per se, than another’s focus on harnessing wind power or teaching conservation to children. But here’s the thing: all “values” aside, are there not, in this hour, some issues more pressing – more worthy of our combined energies and passions as a green community?

If the climate scientists are right, the answer, it would seem, is a resounding “Yes.” The Climate issue, that is, is strikingly “pressing” in that the rivers, the forests, the ice-caps and endangered species, the coastlands, and all that we are trying to protect, are themselves “endangered” by the prospect of what might come in the next few decades if we as a species don’t change our course.

To be sure, whatever we have already been doing, we need to keep doing it, and with no less fervor --- whatever our passions (rivers or forests, alternative energies or endangered habitats) we should not let them go. But for those of us whose main environmental concern has NOT, to this point, been global warming (and I count myself as on that boat), the time has passed for passing the responsibility to “someone else.” If we have no more room on our “front burners,” then clearly we need a bigger stove.

Advancing Renewables Conference, March 28

A friend of ours in the area's sustainability society, David Mars (more on him, and them, soon?), tells us this conference in Columbia is a don't-miss event for the renewable-energy savvy (or for those of us who'd like to be...). Something like 200 people made it to last year's all-day event, and it looks like they've got another impressive line-up of speakers for this one (the keynote speaker this year is Julia Judd, executive director of SEPA -- Solar Electric Power Association).

Still, I look forward just as much to milling around during coffee breaks, seeing what's new on the "renewable" market, and meeting other likeminded folk.

We had a great time at our Winter Energy show on Saturday, February 3rd, 2007! About a hundred people were able to make it, despite the very cold temperatures. If you were unable to make our winter show, we want to invite you to our Spring show, on March 25th from 1pm-4pm!

We also want to invite everyone to check out our workshops going on in February and March. The workshops provide hands-on information and instruction on a variety of Renewable Energy topics. Renewable Energy at Work in India

In India, power shortages are felt nearly everywhere. The reasons range from corruption in government to power theft from over-head power lines. Residents rountinely tamper with electric meters and politicians arrange for families to get free power in exchange for votes. In many small villages, electric power lines are non-existent and the people reside in the darkness with the occassional use of kerosene lanterns.

New Life Evangelistic Center founded an ophranage in the town of Kakinada in southern India. Mark Bernier and Paul Day, recently traveled to India to work with Paparao Yeluchuri, the coordinator of the NLEC center in India and teach how to implement renewable energy. Now, NLEC India is teaching people how to use solar photovoltaics, solar cooking, solar hot water and micro hydro! Thousands participated and it was coverd by state television. Steps are now being taken to use micro-hydro in many rural villages where no electricity exists.

The Weather Channel and Green Machines

Plus, take The Weather Channel’s “Green Vehicle” test. How does your car (or better yet, your next car) rank? How much does it cost annually to fuel? How many tons of greenhouse gas emissions does it produce? How many miles per gallon, and what’s its “air pollution score”? I was amazed at how disparate (and important) the results were.

For example: The average driver will spend over $2,500 more at the pump each year by driving a Dodge Ram 1500 rather than a Toyota Prius. That’d be twenty grand in eight years—the cost of a car!

A Few Ways to Help the Environment

2. Take canvas bags to the grocery store instead of adding to the 84 billion plastic bags Americans use every year

6. Walk or bike

7. Eat lower on the food chain

8. Switch to Green Power

9. Use biofuels and/or a more fuel efficient car
